Week 11 Readings

‘Loose Change’

I like this excerpt because it shows the difference between two cultures. The narrator describes herself as a Londoner and has already made judgements about what that entails, which is keeping to themselves and kindness shown minimally. Arrogance is portrayed by the narrator when it comes to the loose change that Laylor gives her. It is such a small act to the narrator but to Laylor it is big because it is all that she has.

This excerpt shows the difference in how certain cultures see people in need and what they do to help them. Once the narrator found out that Laylor and her brother could possibly need help she left them to fend for themselves. There might’ve not been much she could have done, but a simple act of kindness would have sufficed. In the world, there are people who do not know how to show kindness and a lot of it has to do with the type of culture you were brought up in. Once someone learns something about you or a specific situation you are in, there is a higher chance that there will be judgement and a less likely chance for someone to show kindness. The world is messed up in that way and something needs to be done about it.
